Cell and Molecular Biology Training Grant (CMBTG) Program Description

Application deadline: April 15, 2009 due in the MCB Office, T-466, before 5:00 PM.
The Competitive Interviews will be held between May 18-22, 2009.

Training Grant Retreat: Saturday, May 16, 2009, Waterfront Activities Center.

The Cell and Molecular Biology Training Grant (CMB TG) is a National Research Service Award (NRSA) Predoctoral Institutional Training Program of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of Health, Public Health Service.

The goal of the program is to provide trainees with research opportunities of a cross-disciplinary nature at the molecular and cellular level in the PhD-degree-granting programs of eight participating departments:

  • Biochemistry
  • Biological Structure
  • Biology
  • Immunology
  • Microbiology
  • Pathology
  • Pharmacology
  • Physiology & Biophysics

and three interdisciplinary programs:

  • Molecular and Cellular Biology Program of the University of Washington (UW) and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
  • Neurobiology and Behavior (UW)
  • Biomolecular Structure and Design (UW)

The CMB TG currently has funding for 31 trainee positions. Most students are appointed for three years of support, pending continued National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding and satisfactory progress in their graduate studies. The program allows a maximum of 36 months of support by NRSA Institutional Training Programs. The minimum appointment is for twelve months of continuous support. Each participating department has one "Floor" position to award to a student within that department. The remaining 24 competitive positions are awarded by a Selection Committee consisting of faculty representatives from participating departments. Each spring, eligible students complete an application, which is reviewed by the Selection Committee, and finalists are invited to give a short presentation of their research. The Selection Committee awards positions based on the studentıs application, faculty evaluations and research presentation.

Students apply to the CMB TG during years 2 & 3 of their graduate careers. MSTP and international students are not eligible to apply.

NOTE:

  1. UW Faculty can be either regular departmental faculty or clinicians. If the faculty member does not have a primary appointment in one of the 8 departments, they must have an adjunct appointment in one of the participating departments and must be MCB Faculty.
  2. Hutch Faculty must be in either Basic Science or Human Biology and MCB Faculty. No clinical faculty may apply even if they are MCB Faculty or have an appointment in one of the 8 participating departments.
