Overview

The MCB Program is guided by nine areas of interest (AOI). These interest areas have been identified as the most common research areas among program faculty and students. These areas are:

  • Biophysical and Structural Biology
  • Cancer Biology
  • Cell Signaling and Cell/Environment Interactions
  • Computational Biology
  • Developmental Biology, Stem Cells, and Aging
  • Gene Expression, Cell Cycle, and Chromosome Biology
  • Genetics, Genomics, and Evolution
  • Microbiology, Infection, and Immunity
  • Neuroscience

Each AOI is overseen by faculty and student area directors. Area directors provide guidance and advice to current students on possible rotations, research, and courses.

The areas of interest are not paths or tracks that students need to strictly follow, they are instead meant to be resources for course and rotation planning. Students will find that their research and interests extend to multiple AOIs.

Each AOI has a list of suggested curriculum that cand be found on their individual webpage. Students may find the combined list of all suggested courses from all areas (for the current academic year) especially helpful in course planning. Remember to review the UW Time Schedule for the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding whether a course is currently being offered.
